National 5 Computing Science (Course Code: C816 75) SCQF Level 5 (24 SCQF credit points). This course aims to help you develop a range of computing and computational thinking skills. You will learn how to analyse and solve problems. And, you will develop skills in design and modelling, developing, implementing and testing digital solutions.

In education, computational thinking (CT) is a set of problem-solving methods that involve expressing problems and their solutions in ways that a computer could also execute. It involves the mental skills and practices for 1) designing computations that get computers to do jobs for us, and 2) explaining and interpreting the world as a complex of information processes.

There are three units in this course. The course content outlined here is for National 5. Pupils undertaking National 4 cover much of the same content as National 5 but to a lower level of conceptual understanding. Software Design and Development Candidates develop knowledge.

Welcome to Computing Staff. Mr D McCallum. Mrs L Moran. The Computing department is situated in the IT building and comprises 2 classrooms (Rooms 4 and 5) and access to a staff room. Both rooms are equipped with PCs. The programming language is Visual Basic 6.0 and we use FileMaker Pro 5 for most work with databases.

All of the site exercises are linked to the subject content for the KS3 Programmes of Study for Computing. Some of the exercises will also prove useful for KS4 students. However, there are no links to the KS4 curriculum. Each exercise is linked to part of an appropriate descriptor from the National Curriculum subject content document.

Computing at Key Stage 4 is an optional subject at GCSE with 5 hours of study a fortnight. Students will study the AQA (9-1) course specification which is now broken down into three areas: Paper 1: Computational thinking and problem-solving What's assessed.

Various aspects of computational thinking, which builds on the power and limits of computing processes, whether they are executed by a human or by a machine, are discussed.

To broaden participation in computing we need to look beyond traditional domains of inquiry and expertise. We present results from a demonstration project in which interactive journalism was used to infuse computational thinking into the standard curriculum and regular classroom experience at a middle school with a diverse population.
